Cookies are a perfect way to use up leftover candy. I made these Mini Egg cookies at Easter, and these Smarties cookies are using up leftover Halloween treats. However, Smarties are available year round, so these chocolate chip Smarties cookies can be made anytime.

Ingredient notes

- Butter: You can use salted butter or unsalted butter, it won’t matter here.
- Brown sugar: Because of its higher moisture content, using light brown sugar results in a soft and chewy cookie. (What we want in this Smartie cookie recipe). With white sugar, the cookies will spread more and you’ll end up with flatter, crisper cookies.
- Eggs: Use large eggs.
- Vanilla extract: Pure vanilla extract is a magical ingredient, giving baked goods a deeper and more delicious flavor.
- Flour: You can use regular all-purpose flour (plain flour), or an all purpose gluten-free flour blend. Be aware, however, that Smarties candies are NOT gluten-free (see below).
- Baking powder: Our leavening agent is baking powder for this recipe.
- Smarties candy: Smarties are candy-coated milk chocolate candies that come in multiple colors. These smarties are not the same as the Smarties candies that you find in the USA, which are tart, fruity, and slightly chalky tablets. In Canada, we have those candies, too, but we call them Rockets. If you are in the US, a perfect replacement for chocolate Smarties are M&Ms. Chocolate Smarties in Canada, the UK, and Australia do contain wheat flour and are not gluten-free. So M&M’s are also a good gluten-free substitute for Smarties in this recipe.
- Chocolate chips: Just to give these chocolate Smartie cookies an extra chocolate boost, we are adding milk chocolate chips. You can leave them out, or use white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or chocolate chunks if you prefer.
Step by step instructions
- Melt the butter and beat it with the sugar in a large bowl.
- Beat in the eggs and vanilla.
- Beat in the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Fold in the Smarties and chocolate chips.
- Roll cookie dough into balls and place on prepared cookie sheets.
- Bake until just pale golden brown. Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool.
Tips and variations
- Melted butter: I have tested this recipe using both softened butter and melted butter. Softened butter incorporates air into the cookie batter, giving the cookies a fluffier, more cake-like texture. Melted butter gives these cookies a denser, fudgy center and crisp edges, which is my preference. Either way, the smarties cookies will be delicious.
- Room temperature ingredients: For best results have all ingredients at room temperature. They will blend together more easily and the cookies will have a uniform texture. If you forget to take your eggs out, simply submerge them in warm water for about 5 minutes.
- Don’t overmix: If you mix your cookie dough too much, you’ll get a tough, dense cookie. Mix ingredients until just combined.
- Uniformly sized cookies: Use a tablespoon or a cookie dough scoop, or even a melon baller, to portion the cookie dough balls into uniform sizes so that they will all bake at the same time.
- Leave space: The cookies will spread somewhat, so leave enough space between them to allow for that.
- Add more Smarties: While they are still warm, gently press extra Smarties into the top of each cookie.
- Storage: Once they are completely cool, store Smarties cookies in an airtight container on the counter for up to three days.
- To freeze: Transfer completely cooled cookies to a freezer-safe container or re-sealable freezer bags. Freeze for up to three months.

Smarties Cookies

Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°. Line a large baking sheet or two smaller baking trays with parchment paper or spray lightly with cooking spray.
In the bowl of a stand mixer, or in a large mixing bowl using an electric mixer, beat the melted butter and brown sugar until combined.
Add the eggs and vanilla extract and beat until combined.
Beat in the flour, baking powder, and salt until creamy.
Use a wooden spoon or a spatula to fold in the Smarties and the chocolate chips.
Use a tablespoon or cookie scoop to drop the cookie dough in balls on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake 10 minutes, or until the bottoms and the edges of the cookie begin to turn golden brown.
Remove cookies to a wire rack to cool.
